day 77
riding the roller coaster

Ross Port to Coldwind, Ontario.
Every cyclist you meet out here has something to say about the hills. By themselves each hill is a bit on the long and steep side but certainly within reach of cyclists who have climbed the Rockies or handled numerous consecutive days of howling headwinds.
What makes this area special and worthy of mention in every cross-continental journal that I've read is the number of hills and the opportunities they provide for you.
You will experience fatigue. You will groan at the sight of another hill as you round the corner. Where you used to shout with joy at the sight of a massive downhill instead you will now enjoy the ride while privately groaning with certain knowledge that within a few minutes you will be reclimbing the height that you just descended.
Today I started to keep a hill report again but after my third 200+ metre hill with an 8% grade and numerous smaller ones I decided not to bother. Suffice it to say that 85 kilometers in terrain like this easily equals 120 km in flatter areas in non-headwind conditions.
Having said that I have to also state that the beauty of this area combined with the super fast descents makes it all worth it!
All cyclists who love climbing hills should definately come up here and experience the ride from Nipigon to Saulte Ste Marie. From what I've experienced so far and what others have told me it will be a potentially life changing experience for you.
Time to go to bed to get ready for more hill climbing tomorrow.
