2005 Phred Touring Bicycle Survey

The Phred/International Bicycle Touring Mailing List is one of the major inspirations for the Bicycle Touring 101 web site. The Phred list has inspired a number of bicycle touring related endeavours over the years. One of my favourites is the Phred Touring Bicycle Survey.

Denis Kertz is a well respected member of the Phred list who sets up the survey to run for a very short period of time with long stretches between runs of the survey. The last time the survey ran was in 2003.

You might be wondering why you should consider filling out his survey. Well if you review his 2003 survey results you will notice trends in the data where large numbers of tourers are using a particular piece of equipment with success. This doesn't mean that it's necessarily what you should use but it will give you a starting point when looking into what bicycle touring equipment works best for you. For many of us that's priceless information especially when we are first starting out or looking for a replacement part for something that broke during your last tour.

Whether you are an experienced multiple-roundings of the world kind of bicycle tourist or one who has gone on a tour or two you should consider filling out the survey since the few minutes you spend doing so may easily help someone else.

The 2005 version of this survey asks forty-one questions directly related to bicycle touring. The survey will only be able for submissions from February 1 to 16, 2005.
